Overview
Fire Suppression and Public Safety
The Newark Fire Division (NFD), headquartered in the Public Safety Building at 311 Washington Street, is the agency responsible for protecting the lives and property of Newark's residents from fire, medical emergencies, and hazardous conditions. As one of the largest fire departments in New Jersey, the NFD operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The division is an integral part of the Department of Public Safety, working alongside police and emergency management units to ensure a coordinated response to urban emergencies.
Operations and Response
The division manages a robust network of firehouses strategically located throughout the city's wards. Operations are divided into several battalions to ensure rapid response times.
- Fire Suppression: Responding to structural fires, vehicle fires, and brush fires.
- Emergency Medical Services: First responders provide Basic Life Support (BLS) and assist EMS units during medical crises.
- Special Operations: Includes the Hazardous Materials (HazMat) Unit, Urban Search and Rescue (USAR), and the Marine Division for water-based emergencies.
Prevention and Safety
Beyond emergency response, the Newark Fire Division emphasizes prevention through its Fire Prevention Bureau. This unit conducts inspections of commercial and residential properties to enforce fire codes, investigates the causes of fires (Arson Squad), and educates the public on fire safety practices, such as the importance of working smoke detectors and escape planning. Citizens can contact the headquarters for non-emergency inquiries regarding fire reports or code compliance.
