Overview
About Northern State Prison
Northern State Prison (NSP), located at 168 Frontage Road, is a major correctional facility operated by the New Jersey Department of Corrections (NJDOC). It houses adult male offenders with custody levels ranging from minimum to close supervision. The facility focuses on rehabilitation and security, offering educational programs, vocational training, and therapeutic communities for inmates with substance use disorders. It is distinct from the county jail, serving individuals serving state prison sentences rather than pre-trial detainees.
Visitation Guidelines
Visitation at Northern State Prison is a privilege that requires advance approval. Visitors must be on the inmate’s approved visitor list. The type of visit (Contact vs. Window) depends on the inmate’s custody status and housing unit. Contact visits usually occur on weekends (Saturday/Sunday), while window visits may be scheduled during the week. All visits must be scheduled in advance via the NJDOC website or phone system.
Mail and Money
Sending money to inmates is handled through JPay or similar authorized services; personal checks are not accepted. When sending mail, it is critical to use the P.O. Box address (P.O. Box 2300) rather than the physical Frontage Road address to ensure delivery. All incoming mail is inspected for contraband. The facility enforces a strict zero-tolerance policy for drugs and unauthorized electronic devices.
Security Protocols
Visitors undergo rigorous screening, including metal detectors and ion scanners for drug residue. The dress code is extremely specific: no tight or transparent clothing, no skirts above the knee, no hats, and no clothing resembling military fatigues or inmate uniforms (grey/khaki). Lockers are provided for small personal items, but it is recommended to leave valuables in your vehicle.
