Overview
Criminal Intelligence and Analysis
The Newark Police Division Intelligence Unit, headquartered in the Ralph A. Villani Memorial Building (Police Headquarters), is a specialized component of the city’s law enforcement apparatus. This unit is tasked with the collection, analysis, and dissemination of critical information regarding criminal activities, organized crime groups, and potential threats to public safety. Operating discreetly, the unit supports investigations by providing tactical intelligence to patrol officers and detectives, helping to dismantle gang structures and prevent violent crimes before they occur.
Operational Focus
- Counter-Terrorism: Collaborating with state and federal partners (such as the FBI JTTF) to monitor and assess threats of domestic and international terrorism.
- Gang Investigation: Tracking the movements, membership, and activities of street gangs operating within Newark.
- Crime Analysis: utilizing data-driven approaches to identify crime hotspots and patterns, enabling more effective deployment of police resources.
Headquarters Access
The Intelligence Unit operates out of the central 22 Franklin Street facility. Unlike a standard police precinct, this office deals primarily with sensitive information and is not a walk-in center for general police reports. Access to the unit is strictly restricted to authorized personnel. Members of the public wishing to provide tips or information can often do so anonymously through the department’s tiplines or website, rather than visiting the intelligence office in person.
