Overview
Workforce Development and Employment Services
The Newark One-Stop Career Center, located on Broad Street, is a comprehensive resource operated in partnership with the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development (NJDOL). This facility serves as a primary hub for job seekers, workers, and businesses in Essex County. Its mission is to connect qualified talent with employment opportunities while providing the necessary training and support to enhance workforce readiness. The center offers a variety of federally and state-funded programs under the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) to assist individuals facing barriers to employment, including veterans, youth, and those re-entering the workforce.
Services for Job Seekers
Visitors to the One-Stop Career Center can access a wide range of free services designed to accelerate their job search. Career counselors are available to provide one-on-one guidance, helping individuals assess their skills and develop personalized employment plans. The center hosts workshops on resume writing, interview techniques, and digital literacy. For those who qualify, funding for occupational training in high-demand industries is available. Computers, telephones, and fax machines are provided in the Resource Room to facilitate job applications and communication with potential employers. Priority of service is strictly maintained for veterans and eligible spouses.
Unemployment and Reemployment
While the center primarily focuses on career services, it also serves as a point of contact for Unemployment Insurance (UI) assistance. Phones are available for claimants to contact UI call centers, and staff can assist with navigating the online claims system. The center specifically handles Reemployment Services and Eligibility Assessments (RESEA), a mandatory program for certain UI claimants to ensure they are actively seeking work. Specialized services are also available for individuals with disabilities through the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation Services (DVRS), which may be co-located or accessible through referrals.
