Overview
Healing and Justice for Survivors
Comprehensive Victim Services
The Albany County Crime Victim and Sexual Violence Center (CVSVC) provides critical support and advocacy for survivors of interpersonal violence, including sexual assault, domestic violence, and homicide. Located in the Albany County Office Building on State Street, the center acts as a lifeline for residents during their most difficult moments. The agency operates a 24-hour sexual assault hotline, ensuring that trained counselors are available day and night to offer crisis intervention. Their services are free, confidential, and available to anyone regardless of when the crime occurred or whether it was reported to the police.
Advocacy and Clinical Support
The center’s work extends from the hospital room to the courtroom. Advocates are available to accompany survivors to local emergency departments for forensic examinations, providing emotional support and explaining the medical process. They also assist victims as they navigate the criminal justice system, offering accompaniment to police interviews and court proceedings. Beyond immediate crisis response, the CVSVC employs licensed clinicians who provide trauma-informed therapy for individuals, families, and groups, helping survivors process their experiences and begin the journey of long-term healing.
Compensation and Education
Navigating the financial aftermath of a crime can be overwhelming. The center’s staff assists victims in filing claims with the New York State Office of Victim Services (OVS) to receive reimbursement for medical bills, lost wages, and counseling expenses. They also lead the county’s prevention efforts, conducting educational workshops in schools and colleges on topics such as consent, healthy relationships, and bystander intervention. Through the ‘Enough is Enough’ and ‘Safe Harbour’ programs, they actively work to combat campus sexual assault and human trafficking.
