Overview
Albany County Emergency Management
The Albany County Emergency Management unit operates under the jurisdiction of the Albany County Sheriff’s Office. While its operational headquarters and Emergency Operations Center (EOC) may be located at separate facilities (such as in Clarksville), administrative oversight is coordinated through the county’s central offices at 112 State Street. This agency is responsible for the comprehensive safety framework of the county, ensuring readiness for natural disasters, severe weather events, and public safety emergencies.
Mitigation and Preparedness
The core mission of the department is to minimize the impact of disasters through hazard mitigation planning. Staff work with local municipalities to identify risks—such as flooding or ice storms—and develop strategies to protect infrastructure and property. 📢 NY-Alert: The office manages the local utilization of the NY-Alert mass notification system, which sends critical warnings to residents via phone, text, and email during emergencies.
Response and Recovery
During a crisis, Emergency Management coordinates the deployment of resources, including the Sheriff’s Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and volunteer networks like the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT). They act as the liaison between the State of New York and local first responders, ensuring efficient communication and resource allocation. Following a disaster, the unit assists with damage assessment and the procurement of state and federal recovery funds.
- Training: Conducting drills and exercises for first responders and public officials.
- Special Needs Registry: Maintaining a database to assist vulnerable residents during evacuations.
- Public Safety: Distribution of preparedness guides and emergency supply checklists.
