Overview
Albany County Department of Social Services
Supporting Residents in Need
The Albany County Department of Social Services (DSS) acts as the safety net for the county’s most vulnerable citizens. Located at 162 Washington Avenue, this agency administers state and federal programs designed to provide temporary assistance and promote self-sufficiency. The department serves families, children, the elderly, and individuals with disabilities through a variety of economic and social support systems.
- SNAP and Food Assistance: The department manages the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as food stamps, helping low-income households purchase food.
- Medical and Energy Aid: Staff assist with Medicaid enrollment for health coverage and the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP), which helps residents pay for heating costs during the winter.
- Temporary Assistance: The Temporary Assistance (TA) unit provides cash benefits for housing and basic needs to eligible individuals and families, often coupled with employment resources.
- Protective Services: The Adult Protective Services (APS) division investigates reports of abuse, neglect, or exploitation of vulnerable adults, while Child Protective Services ensures the safety of children.
Visiting the Department
The DSS office is situated on Washington Avenue, near the Dove Street intersection. Visitors should be prepared for security screening upon entry. While walk-ins are accepted for emergencies and initial intakes, many recertifications and document submissions can now be handled online via the myBenefits NY portal or by mail to avoid long wait times.
