Overview
United States Attorney’s Office NDNY
The United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of New York (NDNY) maintains its headquarters in the James T. Foley U.S. Courthouse on Broadway in Albany. As the chief federal law enforcement agency for the district, this office is responsible for the prosecution of federal criminal cases and the representation of the United States in civil litigation. The district encompasses 32 counties across upstate New York, serving a population of approximately 3.4 million people. The Albany office serves as the strategic center for these operations, coordinating efforts with federal, state, and local law enforcement partners to ensure public safety and uphold the rule of law.
Criminal and Civil Divisions
The Criminal Division handles the prosecution of a wide array of federal offenses, including terrorism, organized crime, narcotics trafficking, financial fraud, child exploitation, and public corruption. Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs) work closely with agencies like the FBI, DEA, and ATF to build cases and secure convictions. The Civil Division represents the federal government in court, defending the United States against lawsuits and pursuing affirmative litigation to recover funds lost to fraud or to enforce civil rights laws. This includes cases involving the False Claims Act, environmental regulations, and the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Victim Support and Community Outreach
The office is also dedicated to supporting victims of federal crimes through its Victim-Witness Assistance Program. Specialized staff provide information, emotional support, and guidance through the complex federal criminal justice process, ensuring that victims are treated with dignity and respect. Furthermore, the U.S. Attorney’s Office engages in community outreach programs designed to prevent crime and foster positive relationships between law enforcement and the communities they serve.
