Alfred E. Smith State Office Building
Historic Hub of State Government
The Alfred E. Smith State Office Building, often referred to simply as the ”Smith Building,” is a 34-story Art Deco skyscraper located at 80 South Swan Street, directly across from the New York State Capitol and the Empire State Plaza. Managed by the Office of General Services (OGS), this architectural landmark houses the headquarters and key administrative offices for several major New York State agencies. It serves as a central workplace for thousands of state employees.
- Criminal Justice: The building is the primary home of the Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS), which oversees law enforcement training, accreditation, and criminal history records.
- Civil Service: The Department of Civil Service has offices here, managing the recruitment and testing for the state workforce (though exams are held at various sites).
- Financial Services: Portions of the Department of Financial Services (DFS), specifically the Banking Division, operate from this location, regulating financial products and services.
- Liquor Authority: The State Liquor Authority (SLA) maintains its Albany zone office here, handling licensing for alcohol manufacturers, wholesalers, and retailers.
Visitor Access
As a secure state facility, the Smith Building has strict entry protocols. All visitors must enter through the main lobby on South Swan Street, pass through metal detectors, and have their bags x-rayed. Valid photo identification is required to receive a visitor pass. The building is connected to the Capitol and the Empire State Plaza via an underground concourse, making it accessible during inclement weather.
