NYS Office for the Aging Overview
The New York State Office for the Aging (NYSOFA) is the primary state agency responsible for advocating for, and serving, the interests of New York’s older adults and their caregivers. Headquartered in the Empire State Plaza in Albany, the agency’s mission is to help seniors maintain independence and quality of life through a vast network of programs and services. NYSOFA does not typically provide direct care but rather contracts with 59 local Area Agencies on the Aging (AAAs) to deliver services at the community level.
Key Programs and Resources
NYSOFA administers a wide range of state and federal initiatives designed to support health, financial security, and social connection. Key programs managed or coordinated through this office include:
- NY Connects: A trusted statewide resource providing free, unbiased information about long-term care services and supports for people of all ages or disabilities.
- HIICAP: The Health Insurance Information, Counseling and Assistance Program offers free guidance regarding Medicare, Medigap, and other health insurance issues.
- EPIC: The Elderly Pharmaceutical Insurance Coverage program assists income-eligible seniors with the cost of prescription drugs.
- Family Caregiver Support: providing respite care, counseling, and training for those caring for elderly relatives.
Administration and Advocacy
The Albany headquarters serves as the administrative hub for policy development, funding distribution, and regulatory oversight. The agency works to combat ageism and develop age-friendly communities across the state. Visitors to the agency at the Empire State Plaza should be prepared for security screening protocols common to all state buildings in the complex.
