Overview
NYS Executive Chamber (Office of the Governor)
The Executive Chamber is the official working office of the Governor of New York State, located on the second floor of the historic New York State Capitol in Albany. This suite of offices serves as the command center for the state’s executive branch, where the Governor and senior staff manage the operations of state government, develop policy, and respond to emergencies. The term ‘Executive Chamber’ refers not only to the physical rooms but also to the legal entity of the Governor’s office itself.
Historic Significance
The centerpiece of the Executive Chamber is the Red Room, a ceremonial office used by governors since the 19th century for press conferences, public hearings, and official receptions. Designed by architect Henry Hobson Richardson, the room is renowned for its deep red walls, ornate wood carving, and stained glass. While the Governor’s private working office is adjacent, the Red Room and the ‘Hall of Governors’—a corridor lined with portraits of past state leaders—are among the most historically significant spaces in the Capitol.
Functions and Duties
From this location, the Governor performs vital constitutional duties, including:
- Signing Legislation: Reviewing, signing, or vetoing bills passed by the State Assembly and Senate.
- State of the State: Drafting the annual message that sets the legislative agenda and budget priorities.
- Executive Orders: Issuing directives to manage state operations or address public health and safety crises.
- Appointments: Nominating officials to lead state agencies, boards, and judicial posts.
Visiting and Access
The New York State Capitol is a secure government building. Visitors wishing to see the public areas near the Executive Chamber must pass through security screening, including metal detectors. While the Governor’s private offices are generally closed to the public, guided tours of the Capitol often include the Hall of Governors and, when not in use, the Red Room.
