Overview
NYS Office of the State Comptroller – Unclaimed Funds
Recovering Lost Assets
The Office of Unclaimed Funds (OUF), a division of the New York State Office of the State Comptroller, is headquartered at 110 State Street. This office serves as the custodian for billions of dollars in lost or forgotten money from dormant bank accounts, uncashed checks, insurance policies, and stocks. The Comptroller’s mission is to return these funds to their rightful owners, free of charge.
- Claims Processing: Staff verify ownership and process claims submitted by individuals, estates, and businesses. While most claims are initiated online, complex cases involving estates may require mailing physical documents to this office.
- Reporting Compliance: Banks, insurance companies, and other corporations (holders) report and remit unclaimed property to this division as required by the Abandoned Property Law.
- Consumer Protection: The office protects assets from being lost forever and ensures that funds are available to owners or heirs indefinitely. There is no time limit to file a claim.
Visitor Information
The office is located in the heart of downtown Albany, near the State Capitol. Visitors to 110 State Street must check in at the security desk in the lobby, present valid government-issued photo identification, and receive a visitor badge. While the OUF has a public interface, they strongly encourage using the online ”Search for Lost Money” tool before visiting in person, as most inquiries can be resolved digitally.
