Overview
NYC Board of Elections – Manhattan Borough Office
The Heart of Democracy in Manhattan
The Manhattan Borough Office of the NYC Board of Elections (BOE) is the primary administrative center for all voting matters in New York County. Located at 200 Varick Street in the Hudson Square neighborhood, this office is responsible for ensuring that elections in Manhattan are conducted fairly, accurately, and in accordance with New York State Election Law. This facility is the central hub where Manhattan residents can register to vote, update their registration details, and apply for absentee or early mail ballots. It serves as the operational headquarters for poll worker training and the management of poll sites throughout the borough.
Voter Services
The office provides a wide range of essential services to the public. While many tasks can now be completed online, the Varick Street office offers in-person assistance for:
- Voter Registration: Processing new applications and party enrollment changes.
- Absentee Ballots: Voters can apply for and, during specific periods, pick up absentee ballots in person.
- Ballot Drop-off: During election periods, the office serves as a secure location for dropping off completed absentee and early mail ballots.
- Poll Worker Recruitment: Individuals interested in working on Election Day can apply and receive information here.
Location and Visiting
The office is situated on the 10th floor of 200 Varick Street, a large commercial building also known as the Print Center. The entrance is monitored by security. Visitors should be prepared to present identification to the building security to gain access to the elevators. The office is open to the public during regular business hours, with extended hours often implemented in the weeks immediately preceding a major election. It is easily accessible via the Houston Street subway station (1 train), which is located nearby.
Election Administration
Behind the scenes, the Manhattan Borough Office manages the logistics for hundreds of poll sites across the island. This includes the testing and maintenance of voting machines, the preparation of supply bags for poll workers, and the canvassing (counting) of ballots after the polls close. The staff here work tirelessly to uphold the integrity of the democratic process, ensuring that every valid vote cast in Manhattan is counted.
