Overview
Edgecombe Residential Treatment Facility
The Edgecombe Residential Treatment Facility, located at 611 Edgecombe Avenue in the Washington Heights section of Manhattan, is a minimum-security correctional facility under the jurisdiction of the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS). While legally a state prison, it functions primarily as a transitional center with a focus on substance abuse treatment and community reintegration. The treatment services within the facility are largely administered by Odyssey House, a prominent social services organization. The program serves parolees and detainees who need support transitioning back into society, offering chemical dependency counseling, vocational rehabilitation, and family reunification services. The building itself helps bridge the gap between incarceration and freedom for eligible individuals.
Program Services
- Substance Abuse Treatment: Intensive chemical dependency programs run by Odyssey House staff.
- Reentry Support: Assistance with housing, employment, and social skills for parolees.
- Work Release: Historically a work-release site, though specific programs evolve based on state needs.
- Counseling: Group and individual therapy sessions focusing on relapse prevention and anger management.
Facility Information
As a DOCCS facility, Edgecombe maintains strict security protocols despite its treatment focus. It is one of the few remaining state correctional facilities located within the five boroughs of New York City. The facility serves adult males and has occasionally served females depending on the current state census and mission.
Visitation Rules
Visitors must comply with all NYS DOCCS visitation policies. Valid photo identification is mandatory. Visitors are subject to search and metal detection. A strict dress code is enforced (no revealing clothing, no camouflage, no gang-related colors). Electronic devices, including cell phones, are typically prohibited inside the secure areas.
