Overview
Internal Affairs Bureau (IAB)
Institution Overview
The NYPD Internal Affairs Bureau (IAB) is the specialized division dedicated to preserving the integrity of the New York City Police Department. Located at 315 Hudson Street in Lower Manhattan, the bureau is responsible for investigating allegations of corruption and serious misconduct involving police officers and civilian employees of the NYPD. Unlike the Civilian Complaint Review Board (CCRB), which is an independent agency handling complaints of excessive force and discourtesy, the IAB is an internal unit staffed by police investigators focused on criminal conduct and corruption.
Reporting and Operations
The IAB operates a Command Center 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to receive and process complaints. New Yorkers can report police corruption via telephone, email, or in person.
- Investigations: The bureau handles cases involving bribery, narcotics shielding, perjury, and other criminal activities by officers.
- Confidentiality: While complaints can be made anonymously, the bureau encourages complainants to provide contact information to assist investigators.
- Oversight: The bureau’s activities are monitored by the Commission to Combat Police Corruption to ensure transparency.
Location and Access
The IAB headquarters is situated at 315 Hudson Street. This is a secure facility. Members of the public wishing to make an in-person complaint must pass through strict security screening. Valid identification is required. However, for most individuals, reporting via the hotline or email is the recommended first step.
