Overview
NYPD 34th Precinct – Washington Heights & Inwood
Northern Manhattan Coverage
The 34th Precinct serves the northernmost communities of Manhattan: Washington Heights North and Inwood. Located at 4295 Broadway, near West 183rd Street, this precinct is responsible for a geographically unique area that includes expansive parklands like Fort Tryon Park (home to The Cloisters) and Inwood Hill Park. The jurisdiction generally covers the area north of West 179th Street to the Spuyten Duyvil Creek. This is a densely populated, vibrant, and culturally rich area with a strong Dominican heritage. The officers of the 34th Precinct work to balance the needs of the bustling commercial corridors along Broadway and Dyckman Street with the quiet residential enclaves and park areas.
Operations and Services
The station house operates 24 hours a day, serving as a beacon of safety in the community. Residents can access standard police services including:
- Emergency Response: While 911 handles immediate emergencies, the precinct coordinates patrol response and investigations for local incidents.
- Report Processing: The front desk handles the filing of police reports for crimes such as larceny, assault, and harassment, as well as motor vehicle collision reports.
- Youth Coordination: The precinct engages with the community’s large youth population through Youth Coordination Officers, aiming to provide mentorship and diversionary programs to prevent juvenile delinquency.
Visiting the Precinct
The 34th Precinct station house is a fortress-like structure located directly on Broadway. Visitors must stop at the security booth upon entry. Identification is required for all administrative business. The lobby can be busy, so patience is appreciated. For non-emergency issues, residents are often encouraged to call the precinct’s Community Affairs unit or attend the monthly Community Council meetings to discuss neighborhood concerns like double parking, noise, and sanitation. The precinct is easily reached via the A train to 181st Street or the 1 train to 181st Street, followed by a short walk.
Traffic and Safety
Given the precinct’s location near the George Washington Bridge, traffic safety and enforcement are major priorities. The command frequently conducts operations to address speeding and traffic congestion on major arteries like Broadway and St. Nicholas Avenue. The precinct also manages the safety of large public events and parades that are frequent in this spirited uptown community.
