Overview
NYPD 6th Precinct
Greenwich Village Command
The 6th Precinct of the NYPD is responsible for the safety and security of two of Manhattan’s most historic and culturally significant neighborhoods: Greenwich Village and the West Village. The command’s jurisdiction extends from 14th Street in the north to Houston Street in the south, covering the area from Broadway west to the Hudson River. This precinct protects iconic landmarks such as Washington Square Park, the Stonewall National Monument, and the bustling nightlife corridors of Bleecker and Christopher Streets.
Community Engagement
Given the area’s rich history of activism and its vibrant LGBTQ+ community, the 6th Precinct places a heavy emphasis on community relations. The officers here work closely with local business owners, residents, and university populations (including NYU and The New School). Specialized units within the precinct include:
- Neighborhood Coordination Officers (NCOs): Officers dedicated to specific sectors who serve as local problem-solvers for residents.
- Nightlife Safety: Focused patrols to manage the large crowds attracted to the district’s bars, clubs, and theaters, ensuring a safe environment for patrons and residents alike.
- Crime Prevention: Officers available to conduct security surveys for homes and businesses to help prevent burglary and theft.
Station House Access
The 6th Precinct station house is located at 233 West 10th Street. The front desk is staffed 24/7 to assist with emergencies, take reports, and answer inquiries. The precinct also holds monthly Community Council meetings where the public can interact directly with the commanding officer and discuss neighborhood safety issues.
