Overview
NYPD 7th Precinct
Neighborhood Patrol
The 7th Precinct of the New York City Police Department serves the Lower East Side of Manhattan. This command covers the area roughly bounded by Houston Street to the north, the East River to the south and east, and the Bowery to the west. It is one of the smallest precincts geographically but serves a densely populated and historically rich community. Key locations under its protection include the Williamsburg Bridge, the vibrant Orchard Street shopping district, and numerous public housing developments.
Community Services
The 7th Precinct is dedicated to fostering strong relationships with the diverse residents of the Lower East Side. The station house at 19 1/2 Pitt Street provides several critical services:
- Community Affairs: Officers specifically assigned to address local quality-of-life concerns, attend community board meetings, and organize youth outreach programs.
- Domestic Violence Unit: A specialized team that offers support, safety planning, and investigation for victims of domestic abuse.
- Detective Squad: Investigations into felonies and serious crimes committed within the precinct boundaries.
Public Access
The precinct is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for emergency assistance and filing police reports. Residents can visit the station house to report crimes, accidents, or lost property. For non-emergency quality-of-life complaints (such as noise or blocked driveways), the department encourages the use of NYC’s 311 system, but the precinct desk officer is always available for immediate walk-in concerns.
