Overview
NYPD Candidate Assessment Center
Facility Function
The building at 235 East 20th Street, historically known as the ‘Old Police Academy,’ currently houses the NYPD Candidate Assessment Division (CAD). This facility is the central hub for processing applicants who have passed the civil service exam to become New York City Police Officers. It is distinct from the new Police Academy in College Point, Queens, which is used for cadet training. This Manhattan location focuses on the pre-employment screening process.
Assessment Process
Candidates visiting this center undergo rigorous evaluation steps required for hiring:
- Medical Examination: Physical health screenings including vision and hearing tests.
- Psychological Testing: Written and oral psychological evaluations to determine suitability for police work.
- Character Investigation: Interviews with background investigators to review employment history, criminal records, and personal references.
Visitor Rules
This is a professional law enforcement facility with strict protocols. Dress Code: Business attire is mandatory for all candidates (suits for men, business suits/dresses for women). Jeans, sneakers, and casual wear are prohibited. No Children: Children are not permitted in the building during the screening process. Candidates must arrange childcare in advance. Appointments: Access is by appointment only for candidates; this is not a public precinct for general police services.
