NYC Municipal Archives: Preserving the City’s History
The Department of Records and Information Services
The NYC Municipal Archives, a division of the Department of Records and Information Services (DORIS), is located at 31 Chambers Street within the historic Surrogate’s Court Building. This Beaux-Arts architectural masterpiece is not just an office but a repository of New York City’s administrative history. The Archives preserve and provide access to historical records of the City government, ranging from the Dutch colonial period to the present day. This facility is a primary destination for genealogists, historians, and researchers looking for vital records that predate the consolidation of modern health department records. The collection includes over 200,000 cubic feet of records, including mayoral papers, maps, and the famous 1940s tax photos of every building in the city.
Genealogy and Vital Records
One of the most critical functions of this institution is providing access to older vital records. Unlike the Department of Health, which holds recent records, the Municipal Archives houses:
- Birth Certificates: Records prior to 1910.
- Death Certificates: Records prior to 1949.
- Marriage Licenses: Records prior to 1930.
Researchers can access microfilm machines in the reference room to browse these documents. Copies of these certificates are often required for dual citizenship applications and family tree research. It is important to note that the Archives do not hold current birth or death certificates.
Research and Visiting
The research room is open to the public, but space can be limited, and appointments are often recommended for specific archival retrievals. The building itself is a landmark, featuring a magnificent lobby with mosaic ceilings. Visitors must pass through building security, including metal detectors, as the building also houses active courtrooms. Photography is generally permitted for research purposes (non-flash), but strict rules apply to handling fragile documents.
