Overview
Employee Compensation and Benefits
The Payroll Division, housed within the Bureau of Human Resources at the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. City Government Center, is responsible for the accurate and timely processing of wages for all City of Harrisburg employees. This internal administrative office ensures that the city’s workforce, including police officers, firefighters, and public works crews, are compensated in accordance with collective bargaining agreements and city ordinances. The Payroll staff manages tax withholdings, pension contributions, and other payroll deductions, serving as a vital support system for the municipal government’s operations.
Verification and Records
While primarily serving current and former city employees, the Payroll and Human Resources office acts as the point of contact for external parties requiring employment verification or income confirmation. Mortgage lenders, landlords, and other agencies often communicate with this office to validate the status of city staff. The bureau also oversees the administration of employee benefits, including health insurance and workers’ compensation claims. Note: This office is generally not a public service counter for the average resident but rather an administrative hub for city personnel matters.
Office Access
Located on the fourth floor of the Government Center, access to the Payroll Office is controlled through the building’s main security checkpoint. Visitors, such as former employees picking up tax documents or new hires completing onboarding paperwork, must pass through metal detectors and present identification. The staff is bound by strict confidentiality protocols regarding employee data. For job seekers, the Bureau of Human Resources (located in the same suite) handles recruitment and civil service testing applications.
