Overview
Support and Advocacy for Veterans
Mission and Services
The Dauphin County Department of Veterans Affairs provides essential support to veterans and their families, helping them navigate the complex landscape of federal, state, and county benefits. Located in downtown Harrisburg, often associated with the historic Veterans Memorial Office Building, this department serves as a dedicated advocate for those who have served in the armed forces. The office is accredited to assist with claims preparation and acts as a liaison between the veteran and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).
Benefits Assistance
The primary function of this office is to ensure veterans receive the compensation and recognition they are entitled to. Staff are trained to assist with:
- Compensation and Pension: Filing claims for service-connected disabilities and non-service-connected pensions.
- Healthcare Enrollment: helping veterans apply for VA healthcare benefits and access medical records.
- Education and Training: Guiding veterans through the GI Bill and other educational assistance programs.
- Burial Benefits: Coordinating survivor benefits, burial allowances, and government headstone applications.
- Emergency Assistance: Providing limited temporary financial assistance for necessities like food, shelter, and utilities for eligible veterans in crisis.
Veteran ID Cards
The office facilitates the County Veteran ID Discount Card program. By recording their DD-214 discharge papers with the Recorder of Deeds, veterans can obtain an ID card that grants discounts at participating local businesses, serving as a tangible expression of the community’s gratitude.
Visiting the Office
Veterans seeking assistance are strongly encouraged to make an appointment to ensure a distinct block of time is reserved for their case review. Visitors should bring their DD-214 and any relevant medical or financial documentation. As a county facility, security screening may be required upon entry.
