Overview
Police Records and Reports
The Central Records Division of the Harrisburg Bureau of Police serves as the primary repository for all official police documentation in the city. Located on the second floor of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. City Government Center (City Hall) on Walnut Street, this office is responsible for processing, maintaining, and releasing police incident reports, accident investigations, and arrest records. It acts as the central point of contact for citizens, insurance companies, and legal representatives seeking access to public safety records.
Services Available
Residents and authorized parties can visit the Central Records window to obtain copies of crash reports (accident reports) and incident reports related to stolen property or property damage. The division also handles requests for local criminal history checks for the City of Harrisburg. It is important to note that this office does not provide fingerprinting services; those are typically handled by county or state facilities. The bureau has implemented an online reporting system for certain non-emergency incidents, but official copies of these reports are managed through this physical office.
Fees and Payment
The Records Division has specific payment policies. Cash is generally not accepted directly at the records window. Fees for reports—typically $15 for accident reports and $10 for property crime reports—must be paid via check or money order made payable to the City Treasurer. If a visitor only has cash, they may be directed to the City Treasurer’s office elsewhere in the building to make the payment before receiving their documents.
Location and Security
As part of the City Government Center, access to the Police Records Division is controlled. Visitors must enter through the main public entrance and may be subject to security screening. A valid form of photo identification is required to request records. The building is centrally located in downtown Harrisburg, adjacent to the Market Square Transfer Center, making it highly accessible via public transit.
