Overview
Child Protection and Family Services
The Allegheny County Children, Youth and Families (CYF): North Regional Office is a critical component of the county’s Department of Human Services. Located in the Manchester neighborhood of Pittsburgh’s North Side, this regional office serves families living in the northern communities of Allegheny County. The agency’s primary mandate is to protect children under the age of 18 from abuse and neglect while working to preserve the family unit whenever safe and possible.
Core Services and Functions
The North Regional Office manages a specific caseload of families and provides direct intervention services:
- Child Protective Services (CPS): Investigates reports of child abuse and neglect. Caseworkers assess safety and take immediate action if a child is in danger.
- General Protective Services (GPS): Assessments of families where there are concerns about a child’s well-being that do not reach the threshold of abuse but indicate a need for support to prevent future harm.
- Foster Care and Kinship Care: Coordination of temporary placement for children who cannot remain safely in their own homes, with a priority on placing children with relatives (kinship care).
- Permanency Planning: Working towards reunification of families or, when that is not possible, facilitation of adoption or permanent legal custodianship.
Visiting the Office
Visits to this office are generally by appointment or for scheduled meetings with caseworkers. The facility is secure to protect the privacy of the families and children served. Visitors may be required to show identification and pass through security protocols. This office also connects families with broader county resources, including housing assistance, behavioral health services, and early childhood education programs.
