The Allegheny County Health Department Tuberculosis Clinic, located within the Pulmonary Center on First Avenue, is the primary facility for the diagnosis, treatment, and control of tuberculosis in Allegheny County. This clinic plays a critical role in public health by identifying active and latent TB cases to prevent the spread of infection within the community. The facility offers a range of services for individuals who are symptomatic, have been exposed to TB, or require screening for employment or school entry (Mantoux tuberculin skin testing).
- TB Screening: Administration of tuberculin skin tests (PPD) for risk assessment and employment clearance. Note: This location does not offer Quantiferon (blood) testing.
- Treatment and DOT: Provides medication and Directly Observed Therapy (DOT) for patients with active or latent tuberculosis to ensure course completion.
- Evaluation: Medical assessment including chest x-rays and symptom monitoring for referred patients.
- Contact Tracing: Investigation of close contacts of infectious patients to contain outbreaks.
Visit Information
The clinic operates on a specific schedule for different services. Walk-in services for routine skin testing are typically available on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays, while other days may be reserved for reading tests or scheduled evaluations. Patients are advised to call ahead to confirm the daily schedule, especially for reading skin tests, which must be done 48-72 hours after placement. The clinic is located on the first floor of 425 First Avenue, separate from the main courthouse complex, making it easily accessible for patients. Services are often available at low or no cost for eligible residents.
