Overview
Bureau of Environmental Services
The City of Pittsburgh Bureau of Environmental Services, headquartered on Railroad Street in the Strip District, is the municipal agency responsible for waste management and recycling operations. 🚛 This department ensures the city remains clean and sustainable through the collection of refuse, recyclables, and yard debris. The facility at Railroad Street also serves as a key drop-off center for residents to dispose of specific recyclable materials that are not collected curbside.
Curbside Collection & Services
The bureau manages the weekly residential trash pickup and bi-weekly recycling collection for single-family homes and small apartment buildings. Key programs include:
- Blue Bin Recycling: Distribution and management of the city’s bag-free recycling program.
- Bulk Item Pickup: Collection of large furniture and appliances (limit of two items per week).
- Anti-Litter: Coordination of street sweeping and illegal dumping cleanup efforts.
Strip District Drop-Off Center
The Railroad Street location features a drop-off facility available to city residents. While the administrative office operates during standard business hours, the drop-off center for recyclables (glass, cardboard, mixed paper, plastics, and cans) is typically accessible 24/7. ♻️ Please note that this specific location does not accept yard debris, tires, or scrap metal; those items must be taken to other designated DPW divisions.
Important Policies
To ensure worker safety and efficiency, residents must adhere to strict set-out times (no earlier than 6 PM the night before). 🛑 Electronic waste (TVs, computers) and household hazardous waste (paint, chemicals) are not accepted in curbside trash and must be disposed of through special collection events or registered drop-offs.
