Weis Jr. U.S. Courthouse in downtown Pittsburgh, the office is responsible for the prosecution of federal crimes and the representation of the U.S. government in civil litigation. Led by the U.S. Attorney, the staff works closely with agencies like the FBI, DEA, and ATF to ensure public safety.
Prosecutorial Divisions
- Criminal Division: Handles cases involving terrorism, narcotics trafficking, firearms offenses, white-collar fraud, and cybercrime. 💻
- Civil Division: Defends the United States in civil lawsuits (such as tort claims) and pursues affirmative civil enforcement (such as healthcare fraud recovery).
- Appellate Division: Handles appeals of criminal convictions and sentences before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit.
Building Security
Since the office is located within a federal courthouse, security is strictly enforced. Visitors must pass through airport-style security screening, including metal detectors and x-ray machines. 👮♂️ Prohibited items include weapons of any kind, pocket knives, pepper spray, and often electronics (depending on current court orders). Visitors should bring a valid government-issued photo ID.
