Department of Public Works (DPW)
City Infrastructure and Maintenance
The Pittsburgh Public Works Department is the backbone of the city’s physical infrastructure maintenance. Headquartered in the City-County Building on Grant Street, the department manages a vast array of services essential to the daily lives of residents. Its primary mission is to ensure the safety, cleanliness, and functionality of Pittsburgh’s streets, parks, and public facilities. The department operates through several specialized bureaus and divisions, coordinating everything from pothole repairs to large-scale disaster response.
- Environmental Services: Manages weekly residential refuse collection, curbside recycling programs, and anti-litter initiatives.
- Snow and Ice Control: Responsible for plowing and salting city streets during winter weather events (Snow Plow Tracker).
- Forestry Division: Maintains the city’s urban canopy, pruning street trees, removing hazardous trees, and planting new greenery.
- Street Maintenance: Handles asphalt paving, pothole patching, street sweeping, and the maintenance of steps and walls.
- Park Maintenance: Ensures that city parks, playgrounds, and shelters are clean, safe, and ready for public use.
Permits and Administrative Services
While the heavy machinery operates out of various divisional garages, the administrative office at 414 Grant Street handles public inquiries, permit processing, and strategic planning. Residents can contact this office to report missed trash pickups, request street repairs, or apply for park shelter permits. The department works closely with the OneStopPGH portal for processing fees and applications. Visitors to the City-County Building must pass through security screening.
