Allegheny County Jail
Facility Overview
The Allegheny County Jail (ACJ), located at 950 Second Avenue in downtown Pittsburgh, is a high-security detention center serving the entire county. Opened in 1995, this distinctively modern high-rise facility manages the intake, housing, and release of individuals awaiting trial or serving short county sentences. The jail operates under the authority of the Warden and is overseen by the Jail Oversight Board. It provides essential services including medical care, counseling, and educational programs to the inmate population.
Visitation and Communication
Visitation policies at the ACJ are strictly regulated to ensure safety. Currently, the facility utilizes a Video Visitation system for the majority of social visits, which can often be conducted remotely or from specific kiosks. In-person visits are generally restricted to attorneys and clergy. Family members wishing to communicate with inmates must register with the facility's communication provider. Appointments are required for all visits. The lobby is open for specific hours for administrative purposes and bond processing.
Bond and Commissary
The jail lobby houses the bond processing center. Bail can be posted using cash, certified checks, or through licensed bail bondsmen. There are also self-service kiosks available in the lobby for depositing money into an inmate's commissary account. Visitors should note that personal checks are not accepted.
Security Regulations
Entering the Allegheny County Jail requires passing through rigorous security screening. All visitors are subject to metal detection and search. Strictly prohibited items include cell phones, cameras, recording devices, weapons of any kind, and bags larger than a small clutch. Lockers may be available for a small fee, but it is strongly advised to leave personal belongings at home or in a vehicle.
