Public Safety and Emergency Response
The University of Pittsburgh Police Department is a full-service, state-accredited law enforcement agency headquartered at the Jerome Cochran Public Safety Building on Forbes Avenue. As the third-largest police department in Allegheny County, it is responsible for the safety and security of the University’s 132-acre Pittsburgh campus, serving over 40,000 students, faculty, and staff. The officers are fully commissioned and possess the same authority as municipal police officers, including the power of arrest.
- Patrol Division: Uniformed officers patrol the campus and surrounding neighborhoods 24/7 via vehicle, bicycle, motorcycle, and on foot.
- Investigations: A dedicated team of detectives investigates crimes reported on campus, ranging from theft to more serious offenses.
- Safety Programs: The department manages the Rave Guardian App, the Safe Rider transport service, and campus emergency phones (Blue Lights).

The lobby is staffed around the clock to assist community members with reporting crimes, filing complaints, or seeking information. For emergencies on campus, dial 412-624-2121. The station lobby is open to the public 24 hours a day. Visitors may be asked for identification when requesting specific administrative services. The building is equipped with surveillance and security measures to ensure the safety of all occupants.
