Overview
School Safety and Emergency Management
The Security Department of the Bridgeport Public Schools is responsible for ensuring a safe and secure learning environment for the district’s students, staff, and visitors. Operating under the Board of Education, this department coordinates comprehensive safety protocols across all elementary, high school, and administrative facilities in the city. The department works in close partnership with the Bridgeport Police Department to monitor campus activity, manage emergency response strategies, and oversee the School Resource Officer (SRO) program. The operational base at the Margaret E. Morton Government Center serves as a command and administrative hub, handling dispatch communications, surveillance monitoring, and the coordination of security personnel deployment throughout the district.
Location and Administration
While individual security officers are stationed at schools throughout Bridgeport, the administrative headquarters for the department is located within the Margaret E. Morton Government Center at 999 Broad Street. This downtown municipal complex houses various city agencies, creating a centralized location for inter-departmental coordination. Parents or community members visiting the administrative office for security-related inquiries, background checks, or meetings with the Director of Security must adhere to the building’s strict entry protocols.
Visitor Protocols and Safety
Access to the Government Center is controlled to ensure the safety of city employees and the public. Visitors must pass through a security checkpoint equipped with metal detectors and bag scanners upon entering the lobby. Valid government-issued photo identification is required to obtain a visitor’s pass and proceed to the upper floors. Prohibited items include weapons of any kind, pepper spray, and other dangerous objects. When visiting specific school sites (not this administrative office), parents should be aware that schools utilize visitor management systems (such as Raptor) which require ID scanning to check against sex offender registries before entry is granted.
- Campus Security: Deployment of security officers to monitor school grounds and entrances.
- Emergency Response: Coordination of lockdowns, evacuations, and drills.
- Surveillance: Monitoring of security camera feeds across district properties.
- Visitor Management: Enforcement of entry policies to prevent unauthorized access.
