Hartford Tax Collector’s Office
Municipal Tax Collection and Payment Services
The Hartford Tax Collector’s Office is responsible for the billing and collection of property taxes for the City of Hartford. Located in City Hall, this office handles payments for real estate, personal property, and motor vehicle taxes. A key function of this division is to ensure revenue stability for the city’s operations while assisting residents with the taxation process. Tax bills are typically issued in July, with payments due in two installments (July and January) for real estate and personal property. Motor vehicle taxes are generally due in a single installment in July, with supplemental bills issued in January.
- DMV Clearance: Drivers seeking to register a vehicle must have all delinquent taxes paid. Immediate clearance is available only for payments made by cash, money order, or certified check.
- Real Estate Taxes: Collects annual taxes based on property assessments to fund city services and schools.
- Payment Options: Accepts payments in person, online, or via mail. A secure drop box is available for after-hours payments.
- Delinquency & Liens: Manages the collection of past-due accounts and the issuance of tax liens on properties with unpaid balances.
Important Payment Policies
Visitors paying in person should be aware of specific policies regarding payment methods. While personal checks are accepted, they are subject to a 10-business-day hold before a DMV release can be issued. For immediate clearance at the Department of Motor Vehicles, taxpayers must pay using cash, a certified bank check, or a money order. Online payments via credit or debit card are also available but incur a convenience fee charged by the payment processor. The office emphasizes that failure to receive a tax bill does not exempt a property owner from the obligation to pay taxes or associated interest.
