Overview
Legislative Office Building (LOB)
The Heart of Connecticut’s Legislative Process
The Legislative Office Building (LOB) in Hartford is the primary working space for the Connecticut General Assembly. Located at 300 Capitol Avenue, this modern five-story structure is physically connected to the historic State Capitol building via an underground concourse, creating a unified campus for state governance. The LOB serves as the daily workplace for the state’s 36 Senators and 151 Representatives, housing their individual offices, committee hearing rooms, and administrative support staff. It is designed to facilitate the democratic process by providing ample space for public hearings, legislative research, and constituent interaction.
Facilities and Public Services
The LOB is open to the public and offers a variety of resources for citizens interested in the legislative activities of Connecticut. The building is designed with accessibility and public transparency in mind.
- Public Hearing Rooms: The first two floors contain numerous hearing rooms where legislative committees meet to discuss bills and listen to public testimony.
- Legislator Offices: The upper floors house the individual offices of state legislators, allowing constituents to meet with their elected representatives.
- Cafeteria and Atrium: A large, light-filled atrium serves as a gathering space, often hosting displays and events, while a public cafeteria provides dining options for staff and visitors.
- Legislative Library: Provides research assistance and access to legislative documents for lawmakers and the public.
Access and Architecture
Opened in 1988, the Legislative Office Building was designed to complement the adjacent Victorian Gothic Capitol while offering modern functionality. The building features a distinctive limestone exterior and a soaring glass-roofed atrium. An underground moving walkway connects the LOB directly to the Capitol, allowing for seamless movement between the two buildings regardless of weather. The site also includes a parking garage specifically for the public and staff.
Security and Visiting
The LOB is a secure facility. All visitors must enter through the west entrance and pass through metal detectors and bag screening. Photography is generally permitted in public areas, but visitors should be mindful of ongoing meetings. During the legislative session (typically January/February to May/June), the building is bustling with activity, making it an exciting place to witness state government in action.
