Overview
Fire Prevention and Safety
The Anne Arundel County Fire Marshal Division, located in the Heritage Office Complex on Riva Road, is the primary authority for enforcing fire safety codes within the county. Acting under the direction of the Fire Chief, who serves as the local Assistant State Fire Marshal, this division is dedicated to preventing fires and minimizing the risk to life and property. The office serves developers, business owners, and residents by ensuring that all buildings and structures comply with the Maryland State Fire Prevention Code and local county ordinances.
Inspections and Plan Review
A core function of the Fire Marshal is the review of construction plans for new developments and renovations. Staff examine site plans, sprinkler systems, and fire alarm designs to ensure they meet rigorous safety standards before permits are issued. The division also conducts Life Safety Inspections for businesses, schools, and public assemblies. This includes issuing permits for special events and regulating the use of explosives and fireworks. For the business community, this office is the checkpoint for obtaining Use and Occupancy approvals related to fire safety.
Investigations and Enforcement
The Fire Marshal Division is also a law enforcement entity. Personnel are sworn officers with the authority to investigate the origin and cause of fires and explosions. The Fire and Explosives Investigation Unit works to determine if incidents are accidental or criminal (arson) and has the power to make arrests. Visitors to the Riva Road office typically arrive for plan drop-offs, permit payments, or meetings with inspectors. The facility offers free surface parking and is accessible to the public during business hours.
