Overview
Board of Registration of Architects
The Board of Registration of Architects is the state regulatory body responsible for overseeing the practice of architecture in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Operating under the Division of Occupational Licensure (DOL), the Board ensures that all architects practicing in the state meet rigorous standards of education, experience, and examination. Its primary mission is to protect the public health, safety, and welfare by enforcing the laws and regulations governing the architectural profession.
Licensing and Regulation
- Licensure: Grants licenses to qualified individuals via examination (ARE) or reciprocity for those licensed in other jurisdictions.
- Enforcement: Investigates complaints regarding unlicensed practice, professional misconduct, or negligence.
- Firm Registration: Registers architectural firms, partnerships, and corporations to ensure compliance with state business laws.
- Continuing Education: Monitors compliance with continuing education requirements to ensure architects remain current with industry standards.
Visiting the Office
The Board’s office is located at One Federal Street in Boston’s Financial District. Visitors should be prepared for building security protocols. While staff are available to assist with inquiries, the Board strongly encourages the use of the ePlace Portal for license applications, renewals, and verifying the status of a licensee online.
