Overview
Board of State Examiners of Electricians
The Board of State Examiners of Electricians is the state licensing authority responsible for regulating the electrical trade in Massachusetts. Operating under the Division of Occupational Licensure (DOL), the Board’s primary mission is to protect public safety by establishing and enforcing standards for electrical installations. It ensures that all individuals performing electrical work—from residential wiring to complex systems integrations—are properly trained, examined, and licensed.
Licensing and Functions
The Board oversees the licensure of several key professional categories:
- Master Electrician (Class A): Licensed to conduct business and hire employees.
- Journeyman Electrician (Class B): Licensed to perform electrical work under general supervision.
- Systems Contractor (Class C) & Technician (Class D): Specialists in fire warning and security systems.
In addition to issuing licenses, the Board investigates complaints, conducts fire investigations related to electrical causes, and acts as the primary authority for interpreting the Massachusetts Electrical Code (MEC). They also mediate disputes between local wiring inspectors and licensees.
Location and Access
The Board is located at One Federal Street in Boston’s Financial District. As this is a high-security private office tower, all visitors must present a valid government-issued photo ID at the building’s lobby security desk to receive a visitor badge. Visitors are subject to screening. Most routine administrative tasks, such as license renewals and exam applications, are handled through the state’s ePLACE online portal, reducing the need for in-person visits.
