Overview
Licensing and Regulation
The Massachusetts Board of Real Estate Brokers and Salespersons is the state regulatory body responsible for overseeing the real estate profession. Operating under the Division of Occupational Licensure (DOL), the Board ensures that all individuals and businesses engaged in selling, leasing, or negotiating real estate transactions meet strict qualification standards. The Board was established to protect the public interest by enforcing the Commonwealth’s real estate laws and promoting ethical conduct within the industry 📋.
Education and Examination
One of the Board’s primary functions is mandating educational requirements. It approves real estate schools and curriculum for pre-licensing courses—40 hours for salespersons and 40 hours for brokers. It also oversees the administration of the licensure examination. Additionally, the Board requires all active licensees to complete 12 hours of continuing education every two years to renew their licenses, ensuring that agents stay current with legal updates and fair housing regulations.
Consumer Protection
The Board investigates complaints filed by consumers against licensees. If a broker or salesperson is found to have violated the law (for example, mishandling escrow funds or discrimination), the Board has the authority to suspend or revoke their license. The ”Welcome Center” for the Division of Occupational Licensure is located at 1 Federal Street, where individuals can receive in-person assistance with their licensing applications and renewals 🏢.
