Overview
Downtown Emergency Response
Engine 10, Tower Ladder 3, and Rescue 1 operate out of a unique fire station located at 125 Purchase Street in downtown Boston. Known as ”Station 10,” this facility is integrated into the base of a high-rise office tower, a result of a major redevelopment project in 1989. This station is a critical component of the Boston Fire Department’s infrastructure, protecting the dense Financial District, the waterfront, and the historic neighborhoods nearby. The unit itself, Engine 10, has a storied history dating back to its organization in 1862 🚒.
Specialized Units and Capabilities
This station houses some of the city’s most specialized apparatus. Rescue 1 is a heavy rescue unit equipped for complex technical rescues, including vehicle extrication, confined space operations, and high-angle rescues. The station also serves as the quarters for Division 1 Command and houses the Collapse Unit and Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) assets. These units are deployed for major structural failures and large-scale emergencies across the city.
Community Presence
Located near the Rose Kennedy Greenway and the Seaport District, the station is a familiar sight to commuters and tourists. While it is an active emergency response facility operating 24 hours a day, public access to the interior is generally restricted to official business or scheduled visits. The firefighters here are trained to handle hazardous materials incidents and high-rise fires, reflecting the specific risks of the surrounding urban environment 🏙️.
