Overview
Building Safety and Code Enforcement
The Boston Inspectional Services Department (ISD) serves as the primary regulatory body responsible for enforcing building, housing, health, and zoning codes within the City of Boston. Headquartered at 1010 Massachusetts Avenue, the department’s mission is to protect the safety and quality of life for all residents and visitors. ISD oversees the issuance of permits for construction, renovation, and occupancy, ensuring that all structures meet the rigorous standards of the Massachusetts State Building Code and local ordinances.
Key Divisions and Functions
- Building Division: Reviews architectural plans, issues building permits, and conducts inspections for structural, electrical, plumbing, and gas work. This division helps homeowners and developers navigate the complex permitting process.
- Health Division: Enforces the State Sanitary Code and federal food safety standards. Inspectors routinely visit restaurants, food trucks, and other food service establishments to ensure hygiene compliance. They also handle environmental sanitation issues.
- Housing Inspection: Ensures residential properties meet minimum standards for human habitation, addressing issues such as heating, pests, and structural integrity in rental units.
- Zoning Division: Reviews project proposals for compliance with the Boston Zoning Code and facilitates the process for variances through the Zoning Board of Appeal (ZBA).
Weights and Measures & Community Services
ISD also houses the Weights and Measures Division, which inspects and seals weighing and measuring devices in commercial use, from gas pumps to deli scales, ensuring consumer protection. The department has increasingly moved services online, allowing constituents to file for permits and certificates through digital portals. Visitors to the 1010 Mass Ave building can access the permit counter for in-person assistance, though appointments are recommended for complex plan reviews. 🏗️
