Overview
Shaping the Future of Boston
The Boston Planning Department (formerly known as the BPDA) is the city’s primary agency responsible for urban planning and economic development. Located within Boston City Hall, the department works to guide the physical growth of the city in a way that is inclusive, equitable, and sustainable. Their mission focuses on comprehensive planning, zoning regulation, and the review of development projects to ensure they meet the needs of Boston’s diverse communities.
Core Functions
- Development Review: Oversees the Article 80 process for large and small projects, ensuring community input and mitigation of impacts.
- Zoning: Maintains and updates the Boston Zoning Code to regulate land use and building dimensions.
- Urban Design: Ensures that new developments contribute positively to the city’s architectural landscape and public realm.
- Resilience and Sustainability: Integrates climate change preparedness and carbon neutrality goals into planning initiatives.
Community Engagement
The department actively engages with residents through neighborhood planning initiatives, such as ‘Squares + Streets,’ to create vibrant, walkable districts. They also manage the city’s real estate assets and support affordable housing goals.
Visiting the Department
The main office is situated on the 9th floor of Boston City Hall. Visitors must pass through security screening at the building’s entrance, which includes metal detectors and bag checks. While many resources, including zoning maps and project documents, are available online, staff are available to assist with specific inquiries during business hours.
