Overview
MBTA Advisory Board
The MBTA Advisory Board is an independent statutory body that represents the interests of the 176 cities and towns served by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA). Headquartered in the Transportation Building at 20 Park Plaza, the Board serves as the collective voice of the municipalities that contribute to and rely on the T. It provides critical public oversight, ensuring transparency and accountability in the transit authority’s financial and operational decisions.
Oversight and Functions
The Advisory Board possesses specific statutory powers that enable it to influence mass transit policy:
- Budget Review: It reviews and has the authority to approve or reduce the MBTA’s annual operating budget.
- Capital Planning: It evaluates the Program for Mass Transportation (PMT) and the Capital Investment Program (CIP).
- Leadership Appointment: The Board appoints a member to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) Board of Directors, ensuring municipal representation at the highest level.
Location Note
While the Board historically operated out of Tremont Street, its current offices are located within the State Transportation Building in Park Plaza. This location places it at the center of the state’s transportation planning infrastructure. The Board’s meetings are open to the public, providing a forum for community leaders and residents to voice concerns regarding service levels, fare structures, and transit equity.
