Office of Youth Engagement and Opportunity Overview
Mission and Employment Programs
The Office of Youth Engagement and Opportunity (OYEO), formerly known as the Office of Youth Engagement and Advancement (OYEA), is a dynamic department within the City of Boston dedicated to empowering young residents. Located at 1483 Tremont Street in the Mission Hill neighborhood, the office serves as a critical bridge between the city’s youth (ages 14-25) and resources for personal, professional, and civic growth. A primary focus of the OYEO is workforce development, spearheaded by the SuccessLink program. This initiative connects thousands of Boston teens and young adults with summer and school-year employment opportunities. Through the futureBOS platform, the office helps youth navigate the job market, offering positions in government, non-profits, and the private sector. The goal is not just to provide a paycheck, but to equip young people with the skills, financial literacy, and career exposure necessary for long-term success into adulthood 💼.
Civic Engagement and Leadership
Beyond employment, the OYEO is the home of the Mayor’s Youth Council (MYC). This body is composed of high school-aged representatives from every neighborhood in Boston who advise the Mayor and city government on issues affecting youth. Council members work on subcommittees focused on topics such as mental health, education, violence prevention, and climate justice. They organize events, town halls, and listening sessions to amplify the voices of their peers. The office also manages the “Youth Leads” program and other civic engagement initiatives designed to foster the next generation of community leaders. By providing a platform for youth to be heard, the OYEO ensures that the city’s policies and programs are responsive to the needs of its younger demographics.
- SuccessLink: The city’s main youth employment program for summer and year-round jobs.
- Mayor’s Youth Council: A teen advisory board representing all Boston neighborhoods.
- futureBOS: A centralized portal for youth job listings and career resources.
- Youth Leads: Leadership development and civic participation workshops.
- Grant Programs: Funding opportunities for youth-led community projects.
Location and Accessibility
The OYEO operates out of the BCYF Tobin Community Center building at 1483 Tremont Street. This location is embedded within the community, making it accessible and welcoming to local youth. The facility is easily reachable via the MBTA Roxbury Crossing station on the Orange Line and the Brigham Circle stop on the Green Line (E Branch), as well as several bus routes (66, 39). Unlike formal City Hall offices, the atmosphere here is more community-focused and youth-friendly. Visitors, including youth looking for job help or parents seeking information, are welcome during business hours. The building is fully accessible to people with disabilities, featuring ramps and elevators. Security is present but typically less intrusive than at courthouses; however, visitors should still expect standard safety protocols typical of city community centers.
Digital Resources and Support
Recognizing that its target audience is digital-native, the OYEO invests heavily in online accessibility. The office utilizes social media and the Boston.gov website to announce job fairs, application deadlines, and events. The “Youth Line” and email support provide direct channels for young people to ask questions about work permits, bank accounts, or job applications. The office also collaborates with the Boston Public Schools to ensure students are aware of the opportunities available to them. Whether through virtual workshops on resume writing or in-person onboarding sessions, the OYEO strives to remove barriers to entry for Boston’s youth.
