Overview
Boston Passport Agency
Emergency Travel Services
The Boston Passport Agency is a specialized facility of the U.S. Department of State located in the Tip O’Neill Federal Building. It specifically serves travelers who have urgent international travel plans within 14 calendar days or a life-or-death emergency that requires immediate travel. Unlike standard passport acceptance facilities (like post offices), this agency processes applications on-site, often issuing passports the same day or within a few days depending on the travel urgency.
- Strict Appointment Policy: Walk-in service is NOT available. You must schedule an appointment by calling the National Passport Information Center.
- Required Proof: Applicants must present printed proof of international travel (such as a flight itinerary) and proof of the emergency if applicable.
Location and Security
The agency is housed within a federal building, meaning visitors are subject to airport-style security screening. All personal belongings must go through x-ray machines, and visitors must walk through metal detectors. Weapons, sharp objects, and certain electronics may be restricted. Visitors should arrive no more than 15 minutes before their scheduled appointment time to avoid overcrowding and security delays.
Payment and Processing
Expedited service fees apply in addition to standard application fees. The agency accepts major credit cards, debit cards, checks, and money orders. It is critical to have all application forms filled out (but not signed) before arriving at the window to ensure a smooth process.
