Overview
First Coast Guard District Headquarters
Captain John F. Williams Building
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) maintains a significant presence at 408 Atlantic Avenue, which serves as the headquarters for the First Coast Guard District. Known as the Captain John F. Williams Coast Guard Building, this facility commands Coast Guard operations across eight states in the Northeast, from the Canadian border to Northern New Jersey. While DHS encompasses many agencies, this location is primarily dedicated to the United States Coast Guard’s mission of maritime safety, security, and stewardship.
- Maritime Safety: The command center here coordinates search and rescue missions for thousands of miles of coastline.
- Law Enforcement: Teams based here enforce federal laws on the high seas, including drug interdiction and fisheries regulations.
- Environmental Protection: The district oversees responses to oil spills and hazardous materials incidents in Boston Harbor and beyond.
Security and Visiting
As a key DHS facility and military installation, the building operates under high security. Public access is restricted and typically requires an appointment or military identification. The exterior of the building is a well-known waterfront landmark, originally built in 1918 as an appraiser’s store before being converted for Coast Guard use. Visitors with official business must pass through security screening and present valid government identification.
