Overview
Office Mission and Legal Services
Defending the Indigent
The Federal Public Defender Office for the District of Massachusetts is a critical component of the federal criminal justice system. Located at 51 Sleeper Street in the Fort Point/Seaport district of Boston, this agency provides legal representation to individuals charged with federal crimes who are financially unable to hire a private attorney. Operating under the authority of the Criminal Justice Act (CJA), the office ensures that the Sixth Amendment right to counsel is upheld for all defendants, regardless of their economic status. The staff consists of experienced trial attorneys, appellate lawyers, investigators, and paralegals who work collaboratively to provide a vigorous defense. They handle a wide range of federal cases, including drug offenses, fraud, cybercrimes, and immigration-related offenses. The office is appointed to cases by the U.S. District Court and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit. In addition to direct representation, the Federal Public Defender serves as a resource for the private defense bar, offering training and guidance on complex federal legal issues ⚖️.
Assignments and Procedure
Clients do not walk in to “hire” a public defender; rather, they are appointed one by a federal magistrate judge during their initial court appearance if they qualify based on financial need. The office handles cases at the trial level in the District Court and appeals before the First Circuit. The “Appellate Unit” is specifically dedicated to handling complex legal arguments in higher courts. The “Trial Unit” manages the day-to-day defense of clients facing prosecution. The office also plays a significant role in “Reentry” programs, helping clients navigate the challenges of returning to the community after incarceration. Their work is characterized by a client-centered approach, aiming to treat every individual with dignity and respect while navigating the often intimidating federal legal system.
- Criminal Defense: Representation in federal felony and misdemeanor cases.
- Appellate Advocacy: Handling appeals in the First Circuit Court of Appeals.
- Investigations: Fact-gathering and evidence analysis to support defense strategies.
- CJA Panel Management: Overseeing and training private attorneys who take appointed cases.
- Sentencing Advocacy: Developing comprehensive mitigation strategies for clients.
Location and Visiting
The office is situated on the 5th floor of 51 Sleeper Street, a brick industrial-style building typical of the Fort Point neighborhood. While it is a government office, it does not have the same level of heavy security screening as a federal courthouse, but visitors should still expect a professional environment. Visits are generally by appointment only, usually for clients and their families to meet with their assigned legal team. The building is accessible to persons with disabilities. The location is distinct from the Moakley Federal Courthouse, although it is within walking distance, allowing attorneys to easily travel between their office and court hearings.
Transit and Accessibility
51 Sleeper Street is well-served by public transportation, which is recommended given the high cost and scarcity of parking in the Seaport District. The Courthouse station on the MBTA Silver Line (SL1, SL2, SL3, SL4, SLW) is just a few blocks away. The location is also walkable from South Station (Red Line, Commuter Rail, Amtrak), which is approximately a 10-15 minute walk across the Fort Point Channel. Several bus routes also service the Seaport Blvd and Congress St area. For those who must drive, there are paid parking lots and garages nearby, but rates are among the highest in the city.
