Diplomatic Mission for New England
The Consulate General of Italy in Boston provides essential diplomatic and consular services to Italian citizens and foreign nationals residing in its jurisdiction: Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont. 🇮🇹 Located on the 17th floor of 600 Atlantic Avenue (Federal Reserve Plaza), the Consulate handles matters regarding Italian citizenship, including Jure Sanguinis (citizenship by descent), and maintains the AIRE (Registry of Italians Residing Abroad). It serves as the primary link between the Italian government and the large Italian-American community in the region.
Visas and Documentation
- Visas: The Visa Office processes applications for Schengen (short-stay) and National (long-stay) visas for tourism, study, and work. ✈️ Appointments must be booked online well in advance.
- Passports: Italian citizens registered in AIRE can apply for electronic passports. Biometric data collection is required at the office.
- Vital Records: The Consulate registers birth, marriage, and death certificates issued abroad in Italian municipalities.
Important Procedures
Access to consular services is strictly by appointment only, scheduled through the online Prenot@Mi portal. Walk-ins are generally not accepted. 🚫 Payment for consular fees (passports, visas, citizenship recognition) must be made via Money Order or Cashier’s Check only, payable to the Consulate General of Italy in Boston. Cash and credit cards are not accepted. Visitors will undergo security screening upon entering the building. 🛂
