Overview
Suffolk County Jail – Nashua Street
The Suffolk County Jail, commonly known as the Nashua Street Jail, is a maximum-security detention facility operated by the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department. Located at 200 Nashua Street near North Station and the TD Garden, this facility primarily houses male pre-trial detainees who are awaiting trial in the Massachusetts Superior, District, and Municipal courts. Opened in 1990 to replace the historic Charles Street Jail, it is a modern facility designed to ensure public safety while providing secure custody.
Facility Operations
The jail holds individuals from Boston, Chelsea, Revere, and Winthrop. Unlike a House of Correction which houses sentenced inmates, the population here is transient, consisting largely of individuals pending legal resolution. The facility offers:
- Medical Services: Comprehensive health care for detainees.
- Legal Access: Resources for detainees to consult with attorneys and access legal materials.
- Programs: Educational and substance abuse programming to support rehabilitation and reduce recidivism.
Visiting Policies
Visiting rules are strictly enforced. All visitors must be on the detainee’s approved visitor list and present valid government-issued photo identification. Strict Dress Code: Visitors must dress modestly; prohibited items include mini-skirts, tank tops, ripped clothing, hats, and hooded sweatshirts. Prohibited Items: Cell phones, smartwatches, and all electronics are banned from the visiting area and must be stored in lockers (quarters may be required). Visitors are subject to search and metal detection.
