Overview
Suffolk County Jail (Nashua Street)
The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department operates the Nashua Street Jail, a maximum-security detention facility located at 200 Nashua Street in the West End of Boston, Massachusetts. Built in 1990 to replace the historic Charles Street Jail, this facility primarily houses pre-trial detainees who are awaiting court proceedings in Suffolk County. Under the leadership of the Sheriff, the department is committed to maintaining a safe and secure environment while providing care, custody, and rehabilitative support. The jail is a critical component of the local justice system, managing the intake, transport, and housing of individuals remanded by the courts.
Visitation and Inmate Services
The Nashua Street Jail has strict policies regarding visitation and inmate communication to ensure facility security:
- Visitation: Visits are conducted daily but must be scheduled in advance or adhere to a strict cohort schedule. Visitors must be on the inmate’s approved list.
- Prohibited Items: Visitors are subject to rigorous search procedures. Cell phones, smartwatches, jewelry, and bags are strictly prohibited in the visiting area. Lockers are provided for small personal items.
- Inmate Accounts: Funds for inmate commisaries (Canteen) can be deposited via a kiosk in the lobby or online. Cash is not accepted directly during visits.
- Court Clothing: Family members may drop off appropriate clothing for inmates to wear during jury trials, subject to inspection.
Location and Transit
The jail is located near the Museum of Science and Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). There is no public parking at the jail itself. Visitors are strongly encouraged to use public transportation or nearby commercial garages (such as the MGH garage). The facility is easily accessible via the Science Park/West End station on the Green Line and is a short walk from North Station.
