Overview
Environmental Strike Force
The Environmental Strike Force (ESF) is a specialized interagency unit tasked with investigating and prosecuting serious environmental crimes in Massachusetts. Based out of the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) offices, the Strike Force brings together prosecutors from the Attorney General’s Office, the Massachusetts Environmental Police, and MassDEP scientists and engineers. Their goal is to identify and take action against individuals and businesses that willfully violate environmental laws, putting public health and natural resources at risk.
Investigative Focus
- Illegal Dumping: Targeting the unlawful disposal of solid and hazardous waste, including asbestos and construction debris.
- Pollution: Investigating illegal discharges of pollutants into the Commonwealth’s air, water, or ground.
- Fraud: Pursuing cases involving falsified environmental records or permits.
- Wetlands Violations: Enforcement against unauthorized alteration of protected wetland areas.
Reporting Violations
The Strike Force relies on public tips to identify egregious violators. While the office at 1 Winter Place (part of the MassDEP complex) serves as an administrative base, the unit operates statewide. Citizens are encouraged to report suspicious environmental activity through the 24-hour tip line or online reporting tools. Visitors to the office are subject to state building security protocols.
