About the Board of Registration of Social Workers
The Board of Registration of Social Workers protects the public through the regulation of social work practice in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Operating under the Division of Occupational Licensure (DOL), the Board determines eligibility for admission to examinations, conducts licensing processes, and enforces professional standards. It ensures that all social workers in the state meet the necessary educational and ethical requirements to serve individuals, families, and communities effectively.
Licensing and Regulation
The Board issues licenses for four distinct levels of social work practice:
- LICSW: Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker.
- LCSW: Licensed Certified Social Worker.
- LSW: Licensed Social Worker.
- LSWA: Licensed Social Work Associate.
In addition to issuing licenses, the Board investigates complaints regarding professional conduct and takes disciplinary action when necessary to uphold the integrity of the profession.
